“You Thought This Was Easy? The U.S.–Thailand Free Trade Agreement,” (with Christine Davies), UVA-G-0621 and UVA-G-0621TN This case highlights the intricacies of trade negotiations, the proliferation of free trade agreements, and the welfare effects of free trade agreements. The case is written together with a Darden student who used to work at the USTR under Zoellick.

“Is the World’s Diamond Capital of the World Losing its Sparkle? Diamond Trading and Cutting in a Changing Global Economy,” (with Vincent de Koninck), UVA-G-0612 and UVA-G-0612TN  The case shows how Antwerp gradually loses its edge in diamond cutting to newcomers such as India. The case lends itself well for a discussion of comparative advantage.

“The Panic of 1907,” (with Bob Bruner and Sean Carr), UVA-G-0619 and UVA-G-0619TN This case merges Darden’s Bruner and Carr’s  successful book, The Panic of 1907: Lessons Learned from the Market’s Perfect Storm, with the monetary analysis of A Monetary History of the United States, 1867–1960 by  Friedman and Schwartz to study the liquidity crisis of 1907 that was linked to a bank run.

“The IMF’s Coordinated Growth Strategy of 1977/78,” UVA-G-0601 and UVA-G-0601TN The case lays out the IMF growth strategy for 1977/78 in the aftermath of the first oil crisis. The case illustrates the very mechanical  Keynesianism from the 1970s, and lends itself to a discussion of the Phillips curve, and more broadly expectations.

“Fishy Issues: The U.S. Shrimp Antidumping Case,” UVA-G-0600 and UVA-G-0600TN The case lays out the circumstances of the U.S. antidumping case. The case lends itself well for a discussion of the standard arguments for free trade and the welfare cost of protectionism.

Zimbabwe: Grappling with Hyperinflation,” UVA-G-0599 and UVA-G-0599TN The case contextualizes the recent hyperinflation in Zimbabwe, its consequences, i.e. the winners and losers, and the challenges of fighting hyperinflation. The case offers is an opportunity to teach the quantity equation and money demand.
