MSBL World Series Tournament - Arizona

The tournament is sponsored by the Men's Senior Baseball League (publisher of Hardball Magazine).  The tournament is played on spring training complexes for major league teams around the Phoenix area.  Teams from all over the world compete in this annual tournament which began in 1987

Team members were from Virginia, Maryland, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Texas, and Oregon.  We lost by one run in each of our first three games to Chicago, Atlanta, and Seattle (two of these in the bottom of the last inning).

USA Nationals - 58+ American Division
Team Members:

Team members were from Houston, New Jersey, Washington DC, and Charlottesville, Virginia.   We won the bracket bracket with five wins and one tie, beating teams from Philadelphia, San Diego, Pennsylvania, New England, and San Antonio and tying St. Thomas.  Jim Freeland pitched a complete game 4-2 win over South Dakota in the quarterfinals.  We lost in the semifinals to Philadelphia by a score of 7-3.
Virginia Senators - 48+ Federal Division

Members of the team came from the DC, Charlottesville, and Dallas areas.  We played teams from Delaware, Sacramento, Arizona, Rhode Island, and Chicago.  Heater Heatly pitched our one victory over Hollywood as we had trouble scoring runs.
2003 Tournament

Players were from the Washington DC area, We played teams from Hollywood (CA), San Antonio, Fresno, Chicago, Oregon, and San Francisco.  Games were played at the Chandler Sports Complex (former spring training home of the Milwaukee Brewers), the Gene Autrey Complex in Mesa (spring training home of the California Angels), Red Mountain Complex in Mesa, and the Maryvale Complex (current home of the Milwaukee Brewers).  While the weather was perfect and just to play was fun, the team had limited success in scoring runs.

All the round robin games were highly competitive; the Titans won the first two against Chicago Fire (the 2001 American Division champions) and Tecumseh Green Giants by scoring in the bottom of the last inning.  In game at the Phoenix Municipal Stadium (spring training stadium for the Oakland A's), the Titans came from behind to defeat the Continental Classics.  Next, the Indianapolis Old Stars turned the tables and scored in the bottom of the last inning to win.  The Titans beat the Oregon 50's team and then won the bracket by beating the South Dakota Rushmores who had matched the Titan's record to date.  Having won the division title for the second year in a row, the Titans rolled into the playoffs only to encounter terrific pitching from the Kansas City Monarchs who went on the play for the title on Saturday.  The Monarchs ended up winning the tournament.

In 2001 the DC Titans moved up to the top division, the National Division where there is no limit on the number of former major league players allowed on a team.  After dropping their first game to Texas, they rebounded to win the next five games against Sacramento, Southern California,  and  winning the round robin part of the division and earning a bye in the playoffs.  In the semi-final game they again lost to Texas.

In their first year as a team the DC Titans entered in the Central Division in their age bracket and captured the world series title earning a world series ring. After sitting around during two rain filled days in Tempe, the Titans finally played their first game against the Austin Texas Indians.  After struggling for the first part of the game, the Titans found their stride and won 6-2.  They then proceeded to roll through the rest of the competition beating teams from Philadelphia, Albuquerque, Atlanta, and Alberta.  The championship game was played on Saturday night beginning at 10 pm at Tempe Diablo Stadium (spring training stadium for the California Angels) against Fresno who was also undefeated.  The Titans won 16-3.
