The 2002 edition of the Virginia Orioles had 19 players from the area of Richmond, Charlottesville, and Ashville, NC. The Orioles had hot bats for the round robin part of the tournament and won all five of their games. The team knocked out 90 runs and 115 hits during this win streak. The team batting average was 487 entering the single elimination tournament. Every Oriole contributed in some way to winning the bracket championship. Everything seemed aligned to advance far in the single elimination part of the tournament. Plenty of pitchers were rested, and no one was suffering significant injuries. A win in the first round game against the Carolina Old Timers from Puerto Rico would mean a bye in the second round to set up a semifinal game. Unfortunately, the Orioles faced an excellent pitcher who scattered ten hits over the nine innings and cooled the Oriole bats. As in 2001, the Orioles were unable to put together hits at the right time to advance.

The 2001 Virginia Orioles team had 21 players all from the Charlottesville and Richmond area except one guy from Ashville, NC. The team won its American Division title for the first time with 4 wins and 1 tie. Every game against opponents from Alabama, California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas was very competitive. The strengths for the team until the playoffs were its ability to score runs, its batting average, and its fielding. Going into the playoffs we had averaged over 12 runs a game and 17 hits a game. In the two games prior to the playoffs we had made 0 errors. We looked good and felt good with fresh legs and arms as we took on the Houston Yankees in playoff game with the winner probably to get a bye into the semifinals. Then, the cruel fate of baseball stuck; we made a couple of miscues in the first inning against Houston and gave up 5 runs from which we never were able to recover.

The 2000 edition of the Virginia Orioles was comprised of 20 players from the Charlottesville and Richmond Virginia areas plus one lost soul from New York. The team competed in the 38 & Over Division. In the round robin round the Orioles won three of their five games and moved into the National Division playoffs. On Friday the Orioles eliminated the Puerto Rico's 40 team who were undefeated in their round robin round in a exciting game. This made the Orioles one of the four remaining teams (out of 30 in the 38 and Over Division). The team ended up losing a close game in ten innings against Sun Coast by a 5-4 score. |
